Abstract
Development of a new light scattering photometer is traced from an idea for the identification of bacteria through early experiments and prototype instruments to a commercial product. The design was shaped by laboratory use. Precision of scattering measurements surpassed the optical microscope and led to discovery of new microbiological techniques. Keywords
