Abstract
Food additives are in trouble with the public. Fears have justifiably resulted from the banning of additives that had for years been tagged as "safe." Many people have become so suspicious of all food additives that some food manufacturers have removed them as an advertising device.The "health-food" stores have capitalized on the fear of "synthetic chemicals," and have helped to spread distrust. The very term "food additives" has become a "bad word." Dr. Lewis Thomas1 includes food additives in a list with strip-mining, offshore oil wells, kepone and supersonic transports.
