Observation ofN*(1720)Decay toΔ(1236)πfromπ+pInteractions at 13.1 GeV

Abstract

Evidence is presented for the production of $N^{*}\mathrm{}\left(1720\right)\mathrm{}$ ($M=1719\mathrm{}\pm 6$ MeV, $\Gamma =63\mathrm{}\pm 12$ MeV) and subsequent decay to $\Delta \mathrm{}\left(1236\right)\mathrm{}\pi$ in ${\pi }^{\pm }p$ interactions at 13.1 GeV. Analysis of the sequential decay $N^{*}\mathrm{}\left(1720\right)\mathrm{}\to {\Delta }^{++}{\pi }^{-}\to p{\pi }^{+}{\pi }^{-}$ limits the spin to values greater than $\frac{3}{2}$.
