Abstract
It is shown that the charge-density overlap between orbitals on adjacent atomic sites in -band metals leads to a dependence of the photoionization cross section on the initial-state energy, which accounts for most of the differences observed by Smith et al. between the one-electron density of states and the corresponding x-ray photoemission spectra.
