Hydrogen ion budget of an aggrading forested ecosystem

Abstract
A detailed hydrogen ion budget was developed for the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, in W. Thornton, New Hampshire, U.S.A. Hydrogen ion sources (2541 eq H+ ha-1 yr-1) were found to approximately balance hydrogen ion sinks (2428 eq H+ ha-1 yr-1). Atmospheric hydrogen ion inputs contributed 52% of the total hydrogen ion sources for the ecosystem. Based on this budget, projections of changes in precipitation hydrogen ion loading on water quality were made. Changes in H2SO4 precipitation inputs would have more influence on water quality than HNO3 inputs. DOI: 10.1111/j.2153-3490.1982.tb01817.x
