Abstract
A method for the absolute determination of sedimentation constants by gradient centrifugation is described. The formulas for calculation are given and by an example of a gradient from D2O-H2O mixtures it is shown how the function of the density gradient can be found and calculated. By means of this method it was possible to determine the sedimentation constants of the infectious principle with nucleic acid character from the virus of the foot and mouth disease. It has a value of 37 S. On the assumption of the validity of the relation derived by Gierer this value corresponds to a molecular weight of 3.1 x 106. Other constants derived therefrom for the infectious principle of nucleic acid character and for the virus of the foot and mouth disease are calculated.
