Abstract
Partially purified staphylococcal capsular material (PPCM) prepared from a major capsular type was further purified by exclusion chromatography. Sephadex G-100, G-200, and Sepharose 6B were used in the study of the staphylococcal capsular material. The starting material placed on the column consisted of at least three components, whereas one of the fractions obtained after chromatography on Sepharose 6B exhibited a single precipitin arc in immunoelectrophoresis. The purified component absorbed antibodies from a homologous anticapsular serum completely abolishing the specific capsular reaction.
