Survival After Renal Ischemia in Dogs

Abstract
Of 10 dogs after 6-hour-occlusion of the left renal artery and immediate right nephrectomy 3 survived to sacrifice 2 months after nephrectomy. Of 10 dogs after 6-hour-occlusion of the left renal artery in which right nephrectomy was done 30-61 days later 5 survived to sacrifice 2-2.5 months after nephrectomy. Of 4 dogs after 4.5-hour-occlusion of the left renal artery and immediate right nephrectomy 2 survived to sacrifice 70 days later. Of 6 dogs after 4.5-hour-occlusion of the left renal artery in which right nephrectomy was done 21 days later 4 survived to sacrifice 70 days after nephrectomy. The authors consider the data inconclusive in determining whether delay in contralateral nephrectomy (deferment of the imposition of a work load upon the injured kidney) increases the ability of the ischemically injured kidney to maintain life in dogs.
