Thermochemistry of fluorine compounds. Part II. Reaction calorimetry in bromine trifluoride

Abstract
Heats of reaction of bromine trifluoride solutions containing bromine with molybdenum, potassium iodate, potassium persulphate, and potassium bromide have been measured. The addition of bromine, together with its pre-equilibration, was necessary to control the thermal effects of forming other bromine fluorides. A consistent value for the heat of formation of the reactive species in solution was obtained which can be applied to determine unknown heats of formation. Arguments are advanced for bromine trifluoride as the reactive entity in solution, but the validity of the method does not depend on this assumption. The heats of formation of potassium iodate and potassium persulphate have been re-determined to ensure internal consistency.
