Abstract
We show that the electromagnetic self-energies of the hadrons and the mass splittings are divergent unless there is very special behavior of the electron-hadron scattering amplitude in the deep-inelastic region. We assume only the validity of the Cottingham formula, a nontrivial Bjorken limit of the scattering-structure functions, and analyticity of a partial-wave amplitude in angular momentum .
