Abstract
We have discovered that the average exchange charge density at metallic surfaces is not localized to the surface region, but has a width dependent upon the position of the electron from the surface. As the electron is removed to infinity the hole spreads over the entire crystal. This surprising result is explained, and we conclude that it is principally the correlation hole which consequently must form the image charge at a metal surface. Keywords
