Abstract
A survey of procedures for the detection of differential item functioning is divided according to those based on classical measurement methods and those based on item response theory. Each of the procedures is described, and its advantages and constraints are discussed. Evaluation of each method, based on the existent research, is included in these discussions. The article concludes with recommendations for use under varying circumstances. Keywords
