Abstract

The growth of private residential accommodation for elderly persons is a marked national trend in Britian and it has also become locationally concentrated. This paper reviews recent developments in this sector of housing provision for the elderly, and focuses on evidence of a detailed survey of private residential homes in Devon. The geographical origins of residents are more restricted than is sometimes supposed and homes do not seem to be an immediate factor in the migration of elderly persons. The previous use of buildings is important and links with the tourist trade are discussed. The background of the proprietors of the homes is investigated, highlighting the nature of homes as u27family businessesu27. This sector of housing for the elderly is very important as public policy seems to be relying on it for future care. Therefore, some important trends and possible developments are outlined.-Author
