Abstract
The 3 groups of basic protein substances obtained from cell nuclei are: protamines, containing 1, 2 or 3 of the hexone bases but always arginine; histones, nearly all containing the 3 hexone bases; and those substances which K. Felix has named "basic peptones," containing a high % of 1, 2 or 3 of the hexone bases among the amino acids, but no S or P. Examinations were made of the specific substances of these kinds as found in sperm from carp, herring, barbel, salmon, sturgeon, and trout, and the changes in their relative amounts and composition which occur during the ripening process.
