Abstract
In a cone, of .1% sulfanilamide inhibits the growth of both hemolytic and non-hemolytic enterococci in maltose broth containing 6.5% NaCl. A rapid decrease in the number of viable bacterial cells results in the sulfanilamide broth; the number of enterococci markedly increases in the control. This bac-teriostasis is obtained with small inocula only. Sulfanilamide does not enhance the death rate of very small inocula that fail to cause growth in the control broth. The bacteriostatic action of sulfanilamide is markedly enhanced when the temp. of incubation is increased from 37[degree] to 43[degree] C.
