Pathogenicity of Certain Species of Monilia

Abstract
This paper deals with the pathogenicity of the different groups of Monilia classified according to a method previously descr. by one of these authors (Stoyall). Five separate strains (cultures) of each group, isolated from human sources, were inoculated intraven. into rabbits to determine their pathogenicity. Type I, M. parapsilosis, could be injected ad libitum without producing lesions or death; type II, M. albicans, was fatal to rabbits in relatively small doses, multiplied in the blood stream, produced generalized moniliasis (miliary mycotic abscesses) and was especially deleterious to the kidneys; type III, M. albicans, was slightly pathogenic. The paper gives a full account of each exp., a complete descr. of the histology of the lesion and of the gross appearance of characteristic lesions, and an explanation of the nature of the pathogenicity of the organism.
