Abstract
2‐bromopyridine is made to react with magnesium, with ethyl bromide as auxiliary reagent. The reaction product obtained, which contains pyridylmagnesium bromide in some form or other, is allowed to react with acetophenone, benzophenone or ethyl benzoate with the formation of: phenylmethyl‐(2‐pyridyl)‐carbinol, diphenyl‐(2‐pyridyl)‐carbinol or phenyl‐bis‐(2‐pyridyl)‐carbinol, respectively. In a similar manner from 2.6‐dibromopyridine via a dimagnesium compound and a subsequent reaction with benzaldehyde, 2,6‐bis‐(phenylhydroxymethyl)‐pyridine is obtained.
