Abstract
Descriptive statistics derived from 4 psychiatric case-register areas are presented. Attrition numbers of long-stay inpatients and the accumulation of high-user patients in non-residential facilities are discussed, with the aim of providing tentative suggestions for a more rational planning of services. Similarities and differences among various areas of northern Italy are also described. Keywords
