Etiologic Factors in Aortoiliac and Femoropopliteal Vascular Disease

Abstract
IN 1940 Leriche1 described the following clinical features of obstruction of the terminal aorta: fatigue in hips, thighs or calves appearing after exertion; pallor of the legs on elevation; absence of arterial pulsations in the lower extremities; and inability to maintain a penile erection. He also commented on the slow progress of the syndrome and the rare occurrence ischemic skin lesions.A review of our experience with patients complaining of the effects of aortoiliac obstruction has led us to be dissatisfied with current accounts of what has come to be known as the Leriche syndrome.
