OBSERVATIONS ON THE HEMOLYTIC PROPERTIES OF TYPHUS RICKETTSIAE

Abstract
A rapid test for demonstration of hemolytic properties of typhus rickettsiae is descr. The test is of the same order of sensitivity and reproducibility as titration of toxicity by intraven. inoculation of white mice. The hemolysin reaction appears to require glutamate and Mg and possibly Ca and Mn as well. Metabolic inhibitors reduce the hemolytic activity of rickettsiae. Aureomycin and Terramycin reduce the hemolytic activity of rickettsiae, whereas chloramphenicol does not.
