Abstract
Five patients with severe sulfathiazole intoxication developed an unusual type of renal insufficiency and evidence of injury to the brain. All of the patients showed an unusual increase in serum Na and Cl conc. appearing while oliguria and azo-temia diminished. The excessive height of the serum electrolyte conc. contributed to the death of 2 patients. In 2 cases there were numerous thrombi in interlobular veins associated with ruptured tubules and the proliferation of tubular epithelium in the thrombi. Clinical and pathological evidence of severe cerebral injury was present.
