Abstract
Refractive index measurements of EBBA N-(p-ethoxybenzylidene)-p-butylaniline) were made in the crystal, liq.-crystal, and liq. phases by a prism technique. The principal refractive indices of the crystal phase were obtained by measurements on 2 different specimens of crystals grown in the prisms with small angles, with mol. axis parallel and perpendicular to the prism axis, resp. Orientational order parameters (S) were evaluated by use of the d. data of the liq.-crystal phase extrapolated from the d. value at 1 temp. in the liq.-crystal phase and the thermal expansion coeff. and the densities of the crystal and liq. measured by floatation and sp. gr. bottle techniques, resp. The estd. S-factors agree with those obtained by wide-line NMR studies on deuterated EBBA mols. [on SciFinder(R)Keywords
