MEASUREMENTS OF THE CIRCULATION IN CONSTRICTIVE PERICARDITIS BEFORE AND AFTER RESECTION OF THE PERICARDIUM 1

Abstract
Six patients were studied before and after pericardiectomy. 3 patients were "cured" and 3 improved by the operation. (1) Before operation, the cardiac output per min. and per beat was decreased and the pulsations of the heart were small. The peripheral venous channels were engorged (illustrated by infra-red photographs) and the venous pressure elevated. The circulation time was prolonged. (2) All measurements of the circulation returned to or toward normal levels following operation. (3) Pericardiectomy relieved the obstruction to entrance of blood into the chambers of the heart and relieved the interference which the pericardium had exerted on the contraction and emptying of the heart.
