The problems of measurement of radioactive iodine in thyroid study are divided into three parts: absolute measurement, directional counting, and body fluid analysis. The difficulties encountered in each are discussed and typical instrumentation described. It is pointed out that these problems are often not entirely of a physical nature, but may involve physiologic and anatomic considerations.
