TOTAL NONDIALYZABLE SOLIDS (TNDS) IN HUMAN URINE. I. THE AMOUNT AND COMPOSITION OF TNDS FROM NORMAL SUBJECTS1

Abstract
The total nondialyzable solids (TNDS) of normal human urine were 433 [plus or minus] 114.6 mg/24 hours. The TNDS were analyzed for ash, bound water, Ca, P, N, hexose, sialic acid, hexosamine, total lipids, phos- pholipids, fatty acids, and unsaponifiable matter. The approximate composition of the TNDS: 47% protein, 16.6% protein-bound hexose, 97% sialic acid, 6.2% hexosamine, 3.3% lipids, 12.2% "bound" water, and 8.5%, ash. Amino acids and sugars were investigated by paper chromatography. The excretion in mg/24 hours ([plus or minus] S. D.) was: ash, 367 [plus or minus] 13.2; Ca, 3.5 [plus or minus] 1.1; P, 2.4 [plus or minus] 2.0; N, 36.2[plus or minus] 11.5; hexose, 72.6 [plus or minus] 191; sialic acid, 40.7 [plus or minus] 7.5; hexosamine, 26.5 [plus or minus] 6.1; total lipids, 15.6 [plus or minus] 81. These values were obtained from 4 to 8 subjects, who submitted a total of 7 to 16 twenty-four-hour urine specimens.
