Acute Renal Failure after the Administration of Iopanoic Acid as a Cholecystographic Agent

Abstract
ACUTE renal failure after the ingestion of iopanoic acid† has previously been reported.1 However, from this report it is difficult to implicate iopanoic acid as the sole cause of renal injury, for each of the patients had received other cholecystographic agents. One of these agents, bunamiodyl,‡ has been associated with numerous cases of acute renal failure.2 3 4 Of the four cases of acute renal failure associated with the ingestion of iopanoic acid reported below, doses exceeding those recommended by the manufacturer§ were given in three.
