Marine Cyanophyta from Sierra Leone (West Africa)

Abstract

Species of marine Cyanophyta (36) were identified from the Sierra Leone Peninsula. Habitats investigated include the lateritic littoral region, sandy beaches and mangrove swamps as well as the plankton. The taxa include 3 spp. boring in molluscan shells and 1 free-floating species, Oscillatoria (Trichodesmium) thiebauti, responsible for red tide. The majority of species (26) are new records for Sierra Leone.
