MINIMUM DOSAGE OF THIOUREA, GIVEN TOGETHER WITH IODINE MEDICATION, NECESSARY FOR THE PRODUCTION AND MAINTENANCE OF A REMISSION IN HYPERTHYROIDISM 1

Abstract
It has been found, using the conc. of serum precipitable iodine as an index, that doses of thiourea as low as 0.07 g. daily in conjunction with iodine soln. produced a remission in hyper-thyroidistn with considerable regularity. It was then usually possible to produce the maintenance dose of thiourea to 0.05 or 0.025 g. daily in addition to the iodine soln. without exacerbation. A daily intake of 0.05 g. of thiourea given with iodine soln., or iodine soln. alone, however, proved ineffective in inducing or maintaining a remission of thyroid overactivity in most patients. Finally, complete withdrawal of thiourea was frequently followed by exacerbation of a previously controlled hyperthyroidism.
