Patients with peptic lesions show a chronological parallelism between emotional turmoil and gastroduodenal changes and symptoms. This was clearly demonstrated by direct observations of mucosal changes in a patient with a gastric fistula. Expts. showed that mucus protects the stomach effectively against acid erosion.
