Abstract
Cholesterol (Schultz-positive stain) begins to appear in infantile rat ovary in7- to 11-day old animals. In about 12 days, interstitial cells begin to assume normal mature appearance, and at this time cholesterol becomes much more abundant. Gonadotropin produces no estrogen effect (vaginal smear) until the 8th or 9th day, and until the 12th day the amts. formed are very small. Transition from an unresponsive to a responsive ovarian interstituum coincides with the appearance of cholesterol, rather than with the maturation of the histological characteristics of the interstitial cells.
