Abstract
Interpretation of compressional and shear wave data from the 1974 L.I.S.P.B. seismic experiment has resulted in a detailed crustal cross-section across the Caledonian orogenic belt of northern Britain. This section provides clear evidence of lateral variations in deep structure comparable with the gross geological variations: in particular crustal structure is asymmetric across the orogenic belt. The axis of this asymmetry seems to vary with depth within the central part of the belt but the evidence suggests that any Caledonian destructive plate boundary was located south of the Southern Uplands fault.
