A Note on the Lifetime Risk of Nursing Home Residency

Abstract
The widely accepted estimate that an elderly individual faces a 25% risk of institutionalization in a long-term care facility is assessed. Measures that rely on death certificates to establish nursing home residency are shown to lead to an unacceptable level of error in accounting for utilization. Using national data and a life table method of estimation, it is shown that the elderly individual's risk of institutionalization approaches and may exceed 50%.
