The obstetric performance of the elderly primigravida

Abstract

Summary The obstetric performance of a group of 127 elderly primigravidae delivered from 1980 to 1982 was analysed. There did not appear to be any increased maternal risk in relation to systemic disease or complications of pregnancy. The patients came predominantly from a high socio-economic class and featured a disproportionate number of breech presentations (9 per cent). The patients were managed very actively and had a high rate of intervention. The perinatal mortality rate was 23/1000 including 3 stillbirths. The ‘at risk’ label still applies to the fetus.
