Abstract
The lysianassoid amphipods of The Snares, the Auckland Islands, Campbell Island and Macquarie Island are reported from collections made between 1961 and 1980. The number of lysianassoid species known from these islands is increased from 4 to 24. Fifteen of the 16 species recorded from The Snares are new records, as are 4 of the 6 species from the Auckland Islands, 11 of the 12 species from Campbell Island and 3 of the 6 species from Macquarie Island. Three groups of genera are recognised within the Lysianassoidea. The lysianassid and uristidid groups (after Hurley 1963) are used and a new group, the conicostomatid group, is established with 9 genera. In this group two new genera are proposed, Conicostoma and Scolopostoma, and 3 new species are described: Acontiostoma tuberculata, Stomacontion hurleyi and S. pungapunga. The analysis of this group has required consideration of species occurring outside our study area. In the lysianassid group, 5 genera and 12 species are reported. Parawaldeckia is revised; a new genus, Kakanui, is established; and 8 new species are described: Ensayara iara, Kakanui punui, Lysianopsis tieke, Parawaldeckia dabita, P. hirsuta, P. pulchra, P. suzae and P. vesca. In the uristidid group, 4 genera and 6 species are reported. Five new species are described: Hippomedon hake, H. manene, H. matikuku, Orchomene aahu and Tryphosella serans. Pseudonesimoides cornutilabris Bellan-Santini and Ledoyer is reported, but not placed in an existing group.
