Abstract
It is shown that, in second-order perturbation theory, electrostatically correlated spin-orbit interactions give rise to a "screening" of the spin-orbit coupling constant of an -type configuration. In addition to this "screening" effect, these interactions also lead to an effective spin-other-orbit interaction which is not included in the usual empirical least-squares determination of the Coulomb and spin-orbit parameters. The consequences of this overt effect are discussed.
