Abstract
Body‐centered tetragonal AlCr2 has been shown by neutron diffraction to be antiferromagnetic below the Néel temperature of 598°±5°K. The spin structure obtained from the neutron powder data is characterized by an antiferromagnetic coupling between the adjacent Cr layers in the c‐layer sequence, Al–Cr ↑ –Cr ↓ –Al–, where each Cr layer forms a ferromagnetic sheet. The magnetic moment of Cr is 0.92±0.02 Bohr magneton and the moment inclines 65±2° from the c axis. Neither crystal nor magnetic transition was observed below 598°K down to 1.6°K. The Debye temperature of AlCr2, 472±8°K, was obtained from the coherent nuclear‐scattering data. Keywords
