Abstract
It is almost 20 years since HIV was first isolated and identified as the cause of AIDS. This Viewpoint by Montagnier of the Pasteur Institute provides fresh insights into the frustrations and triumphs of the discovery of HIV, seen through the eyes of the French virologist whose team first identified this new human retrovirus.Keywords
