Abstract
In 41 cases of hypopyon (an accumulation of pus in the anterior chamber of the eye), apart from controls, sulfonamides were used in addition to atropine which is essential and some form of cautery. After identification of the organism in the pus the appropriate type of sulfonamide was used. For pneumococci sulfapyridine, for streptococci sulfanilamide and for staphylococci sulfathiazole appear to be the most suitable. The drugs were applied locally as eye-drops (0.07% soln. in saline isotonic with the lacrimal secretion) or as a very fine 200 mesh powder. Subconjunctival injns., at 2-3 depots, of 10% soluseptasine were also used. The results were encouraging but not phenomenal. The sulfon-amides seemed to accelerate healing and to lessen scarring of the cornea.
