Complex model communities may be less stable than simple model communities, but complex real communities may be stable. Five model predator-prey communities, developed from the literature and based on the fisher[Martes pennanti]-porcupine[Erethizon dorsatum]-snowshoe hare[Lepus americanus]-deer [Odocoileus virginianus] carrion predator-prey community in Upper Peninsula Michigan [USA], show stability in both 1-predator.sbd.1-prey and 1-predator.sbd.3-prey forms. Most 1-predator.sbd.3-prey communities are more stable than 1-predator.sbd.1-prey communities. One major reason for this stability of the more complex communities may be the lack of competition between the prey. Lack of competition between prey may be reasonably widespread in predator-prey communities.
