A Study of Novocain (Procaine) Sensitivity among Navy Dental Officers

Abstract
Some individuals experience allergic conditions following the handling or admn. of novocain. These conditions may occur regularly or occasionally and both the frequency and severity are influenced by the amt. of exposure and the method of admn. Since the symptoms vary in intensity and duration, many questions have arisen concerning the percentage of dentists who are sensitive to novocain, and the amt. of operating time lost by these individuals. This is an important problem to consider in preparing dental logistical studies in the Navy. A questionnaire was planned that would elicit the desired information. Approx. 7500 copies were mailed to both Regulars and Reserves, of which approx. 4000 were completed and returned. Approx. 3% of the individuals returning the forms said that they had at some time experienced novocain sensitivity symptoms. It does not appear that there is either a serious medical or manpower problem associated with novocain sensitivity among Navy Dental Officers.
