ENDOCRINOLOGY OF THE CLIMACTERIC

Abstract
The climacteric is a physiologic phase characterized by progressive loss of ovarian function. Waning ovarian failure is usually gradual. The most striking endocrine changes are estrogen deficiency and gonadotropin excess. The ovaries and adrenals are the principal cites of estrogen production. Vaginal cytology reflects estrogen deficiency. Other endocrines are unaffected or only slightly so.
