Abstract
HEW Soured On Artificial Sweetener Cyclamates are disappearing from everyday food and drink as a result of a recent federal order banning the artificial sweeteners from most foodstuffs. It was unclear in late October, however, how the Food and Drug Administration would make cyclamates available to those, such as diabetics, who have a medical need for them. Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare Robert Finch promised such supplies would be available when he announced the ban of cyclamate as a general food additive. The scientific discussion of cyclamate safety is a long one. It has political and economic overtones stretching back to the time Fidel Castro seized Cuban sugar supplies. At that time, there were sudden shifts in American sugar production, and sugar prices shot upward.
