Mucous Gland Adenoma of Bronchus: Report of a Case with Histochemical Study of Secretion

Abstract

A histological study of a bronchial adenoma revealed that it was composed in its entirety of well differentiated mucous glands. Histochemical studies which included the periodic acid Schiff reaction, toluidine blue and the Millon reaction showed that the intracellular and intra-acinar material was an acid mucopoly-saccharide which was neither amylase or hyaluronidase labile. Thus, histochemically this material is compatible with epithelial mucin. This is strong evidence in support of the theory that at least some bronchial adenomas arise from mucous glands.
