Polarized Visible Spectra of Crystalline Trisoxalatometallates

Abstract
The absorption of polarized light by single crystals of NaMgAl(C2O4)3·9H2O with part of the aluminum isomorphously replaced by the trivalent ions of Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co is reported. Assignments of the observed transitions are made. The polarizations prove that both the spin‐allowed and spin‐forbidden transitions are electric dipolar. They are made allowed by the static asymmetric ligand field and not by coupling to vibrations. The trigonal field strength is evaluated in terms of the parameter K which is found to range from —350 to +500 cm—1.
