STUDIES ON THE SALIVARY SECRETION OF IODIDE*

Abstract

Several reports have dealt with salivary concentration of I¹³¹ (1, 2, 3). The degree of this concentration is similar to that reported for the thyroid gland (4, 5, 6). An additional point of similarity is that the mechanism is inhibited in both the salivary gland and in the thyroid (7) by certain anions. The nature of this mechanism and the question of whether organically bound plasma iodine contributes to salivary iodine are topics of current interest.
