Statistical model calculations of atomic polarizabilities

Abstract

The static electric dipole polarizabilities of neutral inert gas atoms are obtained with the Thomas–Fermi (TF) and the Thomas–Fermi–Dirac (TFD) statistical models. The TF model yields an infinite polarizability; the TFD model yields polarizabilities which are much larger than experiment, though the percent error decreases with increasing atomic number.
