Abstract
Hypertension and oral contraceptives (OCs) are briefly reviewed. OC-induced hypertension is relatively common (4% of users develop diastolic pressures of 90 mm mercury or more) and it cannot be predicted. The results of attempts to understand the mechanism of the rise in blood pressure have been disappointing. It is concluded that women taking OCs should have routine blood pressure checks before and a few months after starting and thereafter at least annually. Keywords
