Some indicators of differences between urban and rural mortality in England and Wales and Scotland

Abstract

This note collates the official statistics on expectation of life and attempts to assess the changes in the urban-rural differences since the middle of the nineteenth century. The magnitude and causes of the differences have altered greatly and the capital cities now show expectations of life higher than the national average.
