Using a miniature model and EMTP simulations to evaluate new methods to control and protect a thyristor-controlled series compensator

Abstract
Some new methods are proposed to control and protect a thyristor-controlled series compensator (TCSC). A TCSC miniature model is developed and the effectiveness of the control methods is confirmed by experiments using the TCSC miniature model for an analogue simulator and EMTP simulations. This paper focuses on the following two methods in addition to the fundamental control methods. First, protection schemes by cooperative operation of arresters, thyristors and bypass switches are proposed. They allow continuous operation during a small contingency and also they allow rapid resumption after a large contingency. EMTP simulation results show that fixing the firing interval during fault occasion reduces the oscillation after the fault removed. Next, studies to reduce subsychronous resonance (SSR) phenomena are described. Reduction effects of SSR by fixing the firing angle are confirmed experimentally The described research represents collaborative efforts among ten Japanese power companies and CRIEPI.
