Alterations in Growth-Cartilage in Experimental Dwarfism

Abstract
Dwarfism was produced in the chick by injection of 3-6 units of insulin into the yolk sac. Both the size of the cartilage cell as well as the amounts of cartilage matrix were diminished in this type of dwarfism. The glycogen content, S35 uptake, and histochemical reactions for metachromasia Schiff reaction, alkaline phosphatase, and phosphorylase were not diminished and gave no clue to the specific biological reaction responsible for insulin induced dwarfism.
